Individuals Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that people who stop using popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals buying such drugs must be informed of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a reversion to original mass within about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through dieting generally have a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Experts believe the mechanism of the injections explains the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the medication describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and I was suddenly starving," described a patient.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Use

Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is higher among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while the jabs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural changes.
